The First Beacon Tower of the Great Wall marks the westernmost point of the Ming dynasty Great Wall's defensive line and is one of the key sites that make up the greater Jiayuguan fortification system. Standing near the city of Jiayuguan at the edge of the Taolai River gorge, it takes its name from its position as the "first" or lead beacon of the wall as it ran westward into the frontier, and it served as an early-warning post relaying signal fires back toward the main garrison at Jiayuguan Fort.

The setting is what makes the tower memorable. It perches on the edge of a deep, dramatic gorge carved by the Taolai River, where sheer cliffs drop away to the water below and the open desert and mountains stretch out to every horizon. The sense of standing at the very edge of the old empire is powerful here, and the combination of the ruined tower, the cliff line, and the empty Gobi gives the site a stark, cinematic quality that many visitors find even more evocative than the better-known fort itself.

The First Beacon Tower is most often visited as part of a circuit with Jiayuguan Fort and the Overhanging Great Wall, and together the three sites tell a more complete story of how the Ming dynasty defended the Hexi Corridor. The tower and its gorge can be explored on foot, but take care along the cliff edges, which are unprotected in places, and keep children well back from the drop.

Bring sun protection and water, as there is very little shade at the site, and wear sturdy shoes for the uneven ground. Early morning or late afternoon offers the most beautiful desert light and smaller crowds. For anyone tracing the full length of the Ming Great Wall to its western extremity, this lonely outpost above the Taolai River is an essential and atmospheric stop in the Jiayuguan area.
