The Erhai Ecological Corridor is a recently completed greenway that traces a roughly 130-kilometer route around the shore of Erhai Lake, opening up long-inaccessible lakefront to pedestrians, cyclists, and electric shuttle vehicles. The project combines ecological restoration with public recreation: former lakefront farms and fish ponds have been converted into wetlands, reed beds, and pedestrian paths, creating a continuous band of protected habitat that also serves as one of the most scenic walking and cycling routes in southwest China.

For travelers, the corridor has transformed how Erhai is experienced. Previously, much of the lakefront was fenced off or privately held, and visitors were limited to a handful of viewpoints and piers. Now it is possible to walk or cycle for tens of kilometers without leaving the shore, with the Cangshan range on one side and the open water on the other. The most popular sections, near Caicun, Longkan, and the Dali Ancient Town waterfront, are paved, flat, and well-suited to casual riders and families.

The ecological focus of the corridor is not decorative. The wetlands function as natural water filtration for the lake, the reed beds shelter migratory birds, and the restoration zones have become important research sites for lake management. Information panels along the route explain the Bai fishing culture, the migratory birdlife, and the ecological recovery of the lake, which has been a major regional priority over the past two decades.

Most travelers experience the corridor by renting a bicycle or e-bike for a half-day or full-day circuit. The flat terrain, the lake views, and the succession of small villages and temple shrines along the way make for one of the most pleasant days out in the Dali region. Sun protection is essential — the Yunnan sun is intense — and early morning or late afternoon rides deliver the best light and the most comfortable temperatures. For a shorter experience, electric shuttle buses serve the most scenic sections.
