The China Mainland Antarctic Village is a coastal hamlet at the southwestern tip of Xuwen County, where the Leizhou Peninsula tapers into the joint waters of the Qiongzhou Strait and the Beibu Gulf. Despite its chilly-sounding name, it marks the southernmost point of the Chinese mainland, the geographic opposite end from Mohe in Heilongjiang, which is nicknamed the Arctic Village. For foreign travelers, the appeal lies in standing at a meaningful coordinate on the map rather than in grand architecture.

The village sits on a small horn-shaped peninsula that pushes out into the sea, surrounded on three sides by turquoise water and coral-fringed reef flats. The coastline is dotted with salt-worn fishing boats, nets stretched out to dry, and groves of casuarina trees that bend inland under the constant sea breeze. Two marker monuments compete for the title of mainland's southernmost tip, and most visitors make the short walk between them for the obligatory photo. On a clear day the coastline of Hainan Island hangs on the southern horizon, only a short distance across the strait.

The real draw for many travelers is the slow pace of village life. Nanji's residents still make their living from small-scale fishing, salt production, and pineapple farming. Fresh seafood stalls line the single main road, grilling shrimp, crab, and squid over charcoal in the evenings. A handful of family-run guesthouses have opened in converted fishermen's homes, offering a more intimate overnight experience than the resorts up the coast. Sunrise over the Qiongzhou Strait is the photographic highlight, with fishing boats heading out against a pink sky.

Reaching the Antarctic Village takes some planning. It is roughly a two-hour drive from downtown Zhanjiang along the peninsula's western shore, past endless pineapple fields and rubber plantations. There is no train service, so independent visitors usually charter a car or join a day tour out of Zhanjiang or Xuwen town. Bring cash, sun protection, and patience for slow rural service, and avoid typhoon season from July to September, when the access road can close temporarily. The reward is one of the quietest coastal corners left on the Chinese mainland.
