О Река Или
The Ili River scenic area runs along both banks of the river as it passes the southern edge of Yining, covering more than forty square kilometers of restored wetlands, parks, and waterfront promenades. It is one of the largest open-access urban green spaces in northwest China and a daily retreat for local residents.
The Ili itself is the lifeline of the valley, rising in the Tianshan Mountains and winding westward across the steppe until it empties into Lake Balkhash. Around Yining the river is broad and slow-moving, fringed by poplar forests, reed beds, and gravel bars that shift with the seasons. Rehabilitated wetlands now host egrets, herons, and in winter wild ducks and swans.
Pedestrian and cycle paths link riverside plazas, tea pavilions, and small amusement rides, and a long promenade makes it easy to walk from the Ili River Bridge east toward the newer district of Kekedala. Sunset is the most popular time to visit: the water catches the last light from the western horizon, a rarity in a Chinese city, since Yining faces the setting sun over the open steppe rather than mountains.
For travelers, the riverside corridor is the most accessible place in Yining to slow down and watch local life. Evening dance gatherings, food stalls selling grilled fish and skewers, and families out for an after-dinner walk create a relaxed atmosphere. The scenic area is open to enter and connects naturally with a visit to Kazanqi or Liuxingjie in the old city, giving visitors a quiet counterpoint to the dense lanes of the old quarters.
