The Tang City Ruins in Yangzhou preserve the remains of the city as it stood during the Tang dynasty, when Yangzhou was one of the most prosperous and cosmopolitan commercial centers in the Chinese empire. Designated as a Major National Historical and Cultural Site in 1996, the ruins are among the more completely preserved ancient city sites in China dating from the medieval period, and they offer a window onto a chapter of Yangzhou's past that the city's later Ming and Qing gardens and merchant mansions do not fully capture.

The protected site sits on the southwestern corner of the former Tang-era administrative compound, overlapping with the area where the Sui-dynasty emperor Yang's traveling palace once stood and falling within the broader Slender West Lake scenic zone. The ruins themselves include the remnants of Tang-era city walls, building foundations, and street alignments, along with a number of important artifacts recovered from the site, such as inscribed steles, decorative architectural elements, and a Tang-dynasty Buddhist stone pillar. Together these traces give a sense of the scale and layout of Yangzhou at its Tang-dynasty peak, when it functioned as a major hub for the salt trade, the Grand Canal, and the wider commercial life of the lower Yangtze region.

The on-site museum, known as the Tang City Ruins Museum, presents these remains within a garden-style setting, with reproductions and reconstructions of Tang-dynasty architecture helping visitors visualize what the city once looked like. Two main exhibitions anchor the displays: one tracing the broader urban history of Yangzhou from the Sui through the Song dynasties, and another focused on the Korean scholar Choe Chiwon, who studied and served in Tang China and whose memory is preserved at a memorial hall within the complex, a reminder of the cultural exchanges that reached Yangzhou from across East Asia during the Tang.

A relaxed visit typically takes around an hour to ninety minutes, and the garden setting makes it a quieter alternative to some of Yangzhou's more heavily visited attractions. Weekday mornings tend to be calmest.

Because the Tang City Ruins sit within the Slender West Lake scenic zone, they combine naturally with visits to Daming Temple, the Han Guangling King Tomb Museum, and the lake itself, making them a natural stop on a day focused on the historic northwestern corner of Yangzhou.
