Slender West Lake (Shouxi Hu) is the signature attraction of Yangzhou and the city's most celebrated scenic garden, a long, narrow stretch of water that has been the centerpiece of Yangzhou's identity as a cultural destination for centuries. Rated as a national 5A tourist attraction, it is essentially a slender river valley transformed into a sequence of composed garden views, with pavilions, bridges, causeways, and planted groves arranged along its banks so that walking or boating its length reveals one carefully framed scene after another rather than a single open panorama. The design intent is classical Jiangnan garden-making on a grand scale, and the result is widely considered one of the finest lake gardens in the lower Yangtze region.

The lake's reputation dates above all to the Qing dynasty, when the Qianlong Emperor visited Yangzhou repeatedly on his southern tours and the local salt merchants vied to build the most beautiful gardens and pavilions along these shores to receive him. Many of the most famous structures within the park, including the Five-Pavilion Bridge, the White Dagoba, and the Twenty-four Bridges area, trace their stories to that era, and the overall composition still carries the feeling of a landscape designed for an emperor's procession, with views staged at intervals rather than scattered randomly. Inscriptions, calligraphy, and literary references from famous poets and painters are layered throughout, giving the site a strong literary dimension in addition to its visual one.

Two ways of seeing the lake are equally rewarding and many visitors do both. Walking the willow-lined causeways and zigzag paths gives time to appreciate the architecture, the rockeries, and the carefully pruned garden scenes up close, while taking one of the garden's boats, ranging from small sculled boats to larger painted craft, lets you take in the composition from the water the way the Qianlong Emperor once did, with pavilions and bridges reflecting in the surface around you. Either approach typically takes two to three hours for a relaxed visit, and the experience changes through the seasons, with spring blossoms and autumn foliage considered the most photogenic windows.

Because Slender West Lake sits at the heart of Yangzhou's historic sightseeing cluster, it pairs naturally with Daming Temple just to its northwest on Shugang hill, with Ge Garden and the Dongguan Street historic quarter to its east, and with the China Grand Canal Museum a short distance to the south, making it the natural anchor of any first visit to Yangzhou.
