A boat cruise on Slender West Lake is less a separate attraction than one of the two classic ways to experience Yangzhou's signature garden lake, alongside walking its causeways. Cruises depart from points along the lake itself and follow its narrow, meandering course past the same pavilions, bridges, and garden scenes that are visible from the shore, but the perspective from the water offers a noticeably different and, in many visitors' eyes, more atmospheric sense of the lake's composition than can be had on foot.

Several types of boat are typically available, ranging from larger electric tour boats that carry groups along the main route, to smaller sculled wooden boats poled along traditional lines, to more elaborate painted craft styled after the imperial barges of the Qing dynasty. The choice of boat affects both the pace and the feel of the trip: the larger electric boats are faster and more efficient, covering the main route in a set time, while the smaller sculled boats move at walking pace and are quieter, letting the willows, stone bridges, and pavilion roofs drift past at something close to the rhythm they were designed to be seen at. The painted craft, in turn, lean into the historical atmosphere that defines the lake as a whole.

The signature sights along the way include the Five-Pavilion Bridge, the White Dagoba, and the Twenty-four Bridges area, all of which take on a different character when approached from the water than from the shore. The reflections of the bridge arches and pavilion roofs in the lake's surface are a recurring visual theme, and on a calm day the composed views that appear around each bend are among the most photographed scenes in Yangzhou.

Most cruises last somewhere between thirty minutes and an hour, depending on the route and the type of boat, and they can be combined easily with a walking tour of the rest of the lake before or afterward. Early mornings and late afternoons tend to offer the best light and the fewest crowds, and on a still day the reflections are noticeably sharper than in the middle of the day.

Because the cruises run entirely within the Slender West Lake scenic area, a boat ride is best treated as part of a wider visit to the lake rather than a standalone outing, and most visitors weave it into their walking route naturally.
