О Бывшая резиденция Чжу Цзыцина
The Zhu Ziqing Former Residence is a small literary museum tucked deep in the lane network of Yangzhou's old city, dedicated to one of the most influential Chinese essayists of the early twentieth century. Zhu Ziqing was born elsewhere but grew up in Yangzhou, and the city considered the place that shaped him. The residence, a typical Qing-era Yangzhou courtyard house, preserves the domestic setting in which he lived and worked, and it offers visitors a quieter, more intimate counterpart to the city's grander historic attractions.
The house itself is a "sanheyuan", a traditional three-sided courtyard dwelling common to Yangzhou and the wider lower Yangtze region, with rooms arranged around an inner courtyard and a strong sense of domestic order in its layout. Walking in from the lane, the sequence of small rooms and quiet courtyards gives a clear sense of how a moderately prosperous local family would have lived in late-imperial and early-republican Yangzhou, with carved wooden details, simple furnishings, and a studious, bookish atmosphere that fits the profile of the writer who grew up here. The narrowness of the surrounding alleys, which can catch first-time visitors by surprise, is part of the point, since it is in these deep residential lanes that much of Yangzhou's old-city character still lives.
Inside, the exhibits introduce Zhu Ziqing's life, his major works, and his place in modern Chinese literature. He is best known for essays such as "Back View" (Beiying), works still widely read in Chinese schools today and regarded as foundational to the modern Chinese essay form, and the displays walk visitors through the major moments of his life, his education, his teaching and writing career, and the cultural circles in which he moved. For visitors with an interest in modern Chinese literature or intellectual history, the residence is one of the more rewarding smaller literary sites in the lower Yangtze.
A typical visit takes around forty-five minutes to an hour, and the residence is rarely crowded. Its location deep in the old-city lanes makes it a deliberate rather than a casual stop, but the surrounding alleys are themselves part of the experience, and visitors who enjoy wandering through residential old-city fabric will find the approach to the house as rewarding as the house itself.
Because the Zhu Ziqing Former Residence sits within the old city near the Dongguan Street area, it can be folded into a walking route that takes in the historic quarters of Yangzhou, particularly for visitors interested in the city's literary and cultural figures rather than only its gardens and temples.
