Baiyun Zen Temple is a small Buddhist temple nestled into the cliffs of the Mount Wuyi scenic area in Fujian province, set within the broader landscape of the Mount Wuyi UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its name, which translates as White Cloud Zen Temple, reflects its position high on a rock face where clouds gather around the peaks, and it is one of the most quietly atmospheric religious sites in the Wuyi range, far less visited than the great Taoist and Confucian complexes downstream.

The temple is built directly against a sheer cliff face beside the river, with the main halls resting on a narrow ledge of rock and projecting outward over the slope below, so that from a distance the whole complex appears almost to hang from the cliff itself. The setting is dramatic and intimate at once, with green mountains rising on every side and the murmur of the stream below. Inside, the temple contains a Maitreya Hall, a Three Jewels Hall, a Guanyin Hall, and a founders' shrine, together with the simple cells and courtyards typical of a small Chan, or Zen, monastery, and the whole place carries the unhurried, devotional atmosphere of a working temple rather than a tourist site.

Baiyun Zen Temple belongs to the Buddhist tradition that coexisted for centuries alongside the better-known Taoist, Confucian, and scholarly sites of Mount Wuyi, and its presence is a reminder of how many layers of religious life the Wuyi range has carried. The temple looks out over the same dramatic danxia landscape as the famous viewpoints of the scenic area, but from a more secluded angle, and the relative quiet of the site makes it a favorite for visitors who want to step out of the busy current of the main tourist circuit.

The temple is reached by a short climb from the scenic area paths, and it can be comfortably included in a half-day walk taking in nearby peaks and viewpoints. Visitors should dress modestly, keep voices low, and respect the devotional life of the resident community. For travelers with an interest in Chinese religious architecture, meditation, or simply quiet corners of famous landscapes, Baiyun Zen Temple is one of the most rewarding small stops on a Wuyishan itinerary, and a beautiful counterpoint to the grander temples and peaks of the Mount Wuyi World Heritage Site.
