О Традиционный квартал Удяньши
Tucked into the older quarters of Jinjiang, a county-level city administered by greater Quanzhou, the Wudianshi Traditional Block preserves a remarkable concentration of Minnan red-brick mansion architecture. Recognized as a 4A-level scenic area, the district spans the architectural output of three successive eras, with buildings dating from the Ming dynasty, the Qing dynasty, and the early Republic of China. For travelers curious about southern Fujian's domestic architecture and the social hierarchies of its merchant elite, Wudianshi is among the most rewarding stops in the region.
The site is also recognized as the cradle of Jinjiang city itself. According to local tradition, the area's name, which translates as Five Shops Market, derives from the five Li-family trading stalls that once anchored a Tang-era settlement along a road connecting Quanzhou's port to its agricultural interior. Over the centuries, Wudianshi produced a remarkable concentration of imperial officials and scholarly elites, including eleven zhuangyuan, the top scorers in the empire-wide imperial examinations, and more than fourteen hundred jinshi degree holders. This scholarly prestige is reflected in the inscribed boards, ancestral shrines, and carved couplets that decorate the preserved mansions.
The architecture itself is the principal draw. Sweeping swallowtail rooflines, intricate carvings of bats, peonies, and mythical beasts, and signature red brick walls glazed in mineral tones distinctive to southern Fujian demonstrate the range of Minnan craftsmanship. Inside, shadowed courtyards, lacquered shrines, and detailed woodwork reveal how successful local families organized domestic life around ancestor worship and Confucian ritual. Several of the larger mansions have been converted into small museums, craft workshops, and tea houses where visitors can rest while studying the spatial grammar of a southern Fujian merchant compound.
Wudianshi also serves as a stage for living culture. Regular folk performances, puppet shows, lantern festivals, and Minnan opera animate the central squares, and food stalls serve regional specialties such as oyster omelettes, peanut soup, and glutinous rice cakes. The district is easily combined with a visit to downtown Quanzhou, since Jinjiang sits a short drive to the south. Foreign travelers will find the site walkable, photogenic, and a useful complement to the city's UNESCO maritime heritage, offering a focused look at the homes and families whose fortunes were built on Quanzhou's trade networks.
Культурное наследие
The Wudianshi Traditional Block lies in the old town of Jinjiang in Quanzhou, said to take its name from a Tang-dynasty market. The block preserves clusters of Minnan red-brick houses, ancestral halls and temples, and early-modern mansions blending Chinese and Western styles, showcasing Minnan traditional architecture and Jinjiang's diaspora heritage. Today it is also a stage for southern-Fujian ICH such as Nanyin and Gaojia opera and for traditional folk customs, where old streets and living culture set each other off.
Посещение: At Wudianshi you can wander among swallow-tail-ridged red-brick houses and finely carved mansions, often coming upon performances of Nanyin, opera and other Minnan traditional arts; the red-brick charm woven with diaspora stories makes it a fine place to feel Jinjiang and Minnan culture up close.
