Гора Цинюань

Rising just three kilometers north of Quanzhou's urban core, Qingyuan Mountain has long served as the city's most accessible natural retreat and one of its most layered cultural landscapes. Locals call it Beishan, the Northern Mountain, and the main scenic area unfolds across granite peaks, misty ravines, and forested slopes that have drawn pilgrims, scholars, and poets for well over a thousand years. For foreign visitors who have just spent a day in the dense old quarters below, the mountain offers cool air, panoramic views over the city, and a quiet counterpoint to Quanzhou's bustling streets.

Qingyuan Mountain's signature sight is the Laojun Yan, a Song-dynasty rock relief of a seated Laozi carved directly into a boulder. Widely regarded as the largest existing Taoist stone sculpture in China, the figure exudes a serene authority that has made it an icon of Chinese religious art. Surrounding trails lead past scattered Buddhist niches, Hindu deity carvings, and Islamic tomb inscriptions, a remarkable concentration that reflects Quanzhou's medieval identity as a port where merchants and monks of many faiths lived side by side.

The mountain was formally inscribed within Quanzhou's UNESCO World Heritage serial property in 2021, recognized as part of "Quanzhou: Emporium of the World for Song and Yuan China." Walking the paths, visitors encounter Taoist pavilions, Buddhist grottoes, ancient inscriptions, and springs whose names are bound up with local legend. The combination of natural scenery and religious archaeology makes Qingyuan one of the few Chinese mountains where the spiritual history of an entire region can be read directly in stone.

Most travelers allow a half day to explore the central peaks, with the Laozi sculpture, the Mituoyan Buddhist cave, and the Qianshou cliff carvings as the usual highlights. Stairways are well maintained but steep in places, so sturdy shoes and water are essential. On clear days the higher viewpoints look out over Quanzhou's red-tiled rooftops toward the sea, an apt reminder of why this mountain was treasured by the very merchants whose ships defined the medieval Maritime Silk Road.
