Mount Xuedou is a forested Buddhist mountain in the Xikou scenic area on the eastern fringe of Ningbo, celebrated for its waterfalls, stream valleys, and one of the most influential temples in Chinese Buddhism. Long regarded as one of the great sacred mountains of eastern China, it is an important site within the Maitreya, or Future Buddha, tradition. For travelers who enjoy mountain hiking, religious heritage, and cool forest air, it is one of the most rewarding day trips from the city.

The mountain is best known for Xuedou Temple, a large monastery whose most striking feature is a towering open-air bronze statue of Maitreya, the laughing Buddha, visible from far down the valley. The temple complex is a major pilgrimage site, and the scent of incense, chanting of sutras, and steady stream of worshippers give it a devotional atmosphere that is genuinely moving. Around the temple, a network of paths leads up to scenic viewpoints, hidden hermitages, and quiet forest groves.

Beyond the religious sites, the mountain is loved for its natural scenery, especially its waterfalls. The most famous cascade tumbles down a sheer rock face in three dramatic steps, framed by lush vegetation and viewing pavilions, and the spray from the falls keeps the surrounding trails cool even on hot summer days. Streams run through the valleys below, crossed by stone bridges and lined with walking paths that invite a slow, contemplative ramble.

Mount Xuedou is usually visited as part of a day trip to the Xikou scenic area, and it combines well with the historic town of Xikou and the Chiang family residence nearby. Plan to spend at least half a day here, and be prepared for some uphill walking on stone steps. Spring and autumn are the loveliest seasons, when the forest is at its greenest and the waterfalls at their most reliable, while summer offers cool relief from the lowland heat. Comfortable shoes, water, and a camera are all worth bringing for one of the most peaceful and atmospheric corners of the Ningbo region.
