Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is one of Lijiang's most iconic natural landmarks and a place of deep spiritual significance to the local Naxi people, who regard it as a sacred mountain. The range consists of thirteen peaks that rise and fall along a ridge said to resemble a silver dragon in flight, which is how the mountain earned its name. Its glaciated summit, visible from much of Lijiang on clear days, has made it a defining symbol of the region for centuries.

The scenic area offers several ways to experience the mountain, with cable cars carrying visitors up to different sections rather than requiring technical mountaineering. From the upper stations, visitors can take in close-up views of high-altitude glaciers and dramatic alpine scenery that would otherwise be difficult to reach. Lower down, the mountain's foothills include meadows, forested slopes, and valleys such as Blue Moon Valley, giving the broader scenic area a variety of landscapes beyond the icy peaks themselves.

Because of the significant elevation involved, visitors should pace themselves carefully, dress in warm layers regardless of the season, and be prepared for the effects of thinner air even when using the cable cars. Weather on the mountain can change quickly, so checking conditions before heading up and allowing extra time in the itinerary is advisable. Most visitors set aside the better part of a day to explore the scenic area properly.

As the signature natural attraction near Lijiang, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is typically the centerpiece of a full-day excursion from the old town, often combined with nearby sights such as Blue Moon Valley or Spruce Meadow depending on which cableway route is chosen.
