The Princess Wencheng Theatre sits in the Cijuelin valley on the south bank of the Lhasa River, and is the purpose-built home of the Princess Wencheng Grand Epic Drama, the most ambitious open-air performance in the region. The theater was designed as a high-altitude open-air venue that makes full use of its setting, using the natural mountainside as a backdrop and the wide plateau sky as a ceiling, so that the staging of the show extends beyond the limits of any conventional indoor theater.

The site faces the Potala Palace across the river, and the choice of location ties the production to the broader sacred geography of Lhasa. At night, when the palace is illuminated, the silhouette of the Red Hill becomes an unspoken part of the visual experience of attending a performance, and during the day the surrounding mountains frame the theater on every side.
