О Норбулинка

Norbulingka, whose name translates as Treasure Garden, is the summer palace and parkland on the western edge of Lhasa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Potala and the Jokhang. Where the Potala represents the monumental and formal face of Tibetan governance, Norbulingka offers its more intimate and leisurely side, a planned landscape of palaces, pavilions, ponds, and gardens where the Dalai Lamas and their courts spent the warmer months of the year.

The site holds hundreds of rooms distributed across several palace buildings, each associated with a different period and patron. The palaces combine Tibetan architectural form with painted decoration, carved wood, and the rich furnishings of a working court, and they preserve a record of domestic, ceremonial, and religious life that complements what visitors see at the Potala. The layout of the compound, with its sequence of courtyards, flowerbeds, and tree-lined paths, was designed to create a retreat from the formal demands of the palace on the Red Hill.

The gardens are what most travelers remember. Norbulingka shelters a remarkable collection of trees, flowers, and ornamental plantings that thrive in the sheltered microclimate of the valley, and the contrast between the lush grounds and the dry plateau beyond the walls is striking. During the summer months, particularly around the Shoton festival, the park becomes the setting for open-air opera performances, picnics, and family outings that draw large crowds from across Lhasa.

For visitors, Norbulingka is the most peaceful of the major heritage sites in Lhasa and a rewarding place to spend a slow afternoon. The wide paths, shaded benches, and pond-side pavilions make it an easy site to enjoy at a relaxed pace, and the interiors of the palaces offer some of the most detailed interiors of any Tibetan historic building open to the public. Combined with a morning at the Potala, Norbulingka completes the picture of the Lhasa court.

Культурное наследие

Norbulingka ('Jewel Garden' in Tibetan) lies west of Lhasa's old city; founded in the eighteenth century by the Seventh Dalai Lama, it served as the summer palace and political retreat for successive Dalai Lamas. Its 360,000 square metres include palace precincts, a protector-deity shrine area and extensive parkland with ancient trees and pavilions, making it the largest man-made garden in Tibet; inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1994.

Посещение: On ordinary days Norbulingka is a beloved city park where Lhasa families spread out beneath the trees for butter-tea picnics; during the Shoton Festival, it becomes the main stage for Tibetan opera performances and cultural celebrations—the crowd is enormous and percussion fills the air, making it one of the best places to witness Lhasa's festival culture at full intensity. The palace precincts preserve fine murals and the personal effects of the Dalai Lamas, offering a window onto Tibetan court life from the eighteenth to the twentieth century.
