Namtso National Park protects the wide expanse of plateau grassland, wetland, and high mountains that surrounds Lake Namtso and provides the official framework within which the famous sacred lake is visited by travelers. The park encompasses not only the lake and its shoreline but also the sweeping rangeland crossed on the journey from Lhasa and the high pass of the Nyenchen Tanglha range that marks the watershed between the river valleys and the Changtang plateau.

For visitors, the national park designation is most visible in the network of access roads, viewing areas, visitor facilities, and lakeside stops that organize the classic Namtso excursion. The approach road climbs through valleys used by nomadic herders, passes strings of prayer flags at the high pass, and then drops toward the open expanse of the lakeshore, where the grassland flattens out under an enormous sky. Each of these sections is part of what the park protects, and the transition between them is as memorable as the first view of the lake itself.

The park is also significant for its ecological role. The wetlands around Namtso support migratory birdlife, the rangelands sustain the herding economy of local communities, and the high-altitude ecosystems are sensitive to disturbance. Visitor management within the park is designed to balance access with the protection of these fragile environments, and travelers are asked to stay on marked routes and to carry out everything they bring in.

Because the altitude within the park is considerably higher than in Lhasa, an overnight excursion requires proper acclimatization and preparation for cold weather even in the height of summer. For most travelers, the visit to Namtso National Park is the most ambitious leg of a Lhasa-area itinerary, and it offers the clearest sense of the immense scale of the Tibetan plateau and the landscapes that lie beyond the cultural monuments of the capital.
