The Overhanging Great Wall is a striking section of the Great Wall near Jiayuguan City, where the ramparts climb so steeply up a rocky ridge that from a distance they appear to hang from the cliffs, giving the wall its vivid name. Built as part of the same Ming dynasty frontier system that centers on nearby Jiayuguan Fort, it served to close off one of the few mountain approaches to the main pass, linking the fortress to the surrounding heights and completing the defensive net across the Hexi Corridor.

The scenic area is themed around two intertwined strands of Silk Road and Great Wall culture. The main sights include the Overhanging Great Wall itself, the "Silk Road" sculpture group that evokes the ancient camel caravans winding between China and Central Asia, and an exhibition of weapons and military gear once used in the defense of the Jiayuguan frontier. Together they paint a picture of a frontier zone where trade and warfare constantly met.

The wall walk is the highlight of the visit. The path climbs along the restored ramparts and watchtowers, and while the going can be steep in places, the reward is an outstanding panorama back over the desert basin, the irrigation oases around the city, and the distant line of snow peaks along the Qilian range. Photographers love the dramatic angle of the wall against the skyline, especially in the clear desert light of morning or late afternoon.

The Overhanging Great Wall pairs naturally with Jiayuguan Fort and the First Beacon Tower, and the three are often visited together as a circuit exploring the western end of the Ming Great Wall. Wear sturdy shoes for the climb, bring water and sun protection, and allow a couple of hours to enjoy both the wall and the cultural displays at a relaxed pace.
