Jiayuguan Fort, often honored as the "First and Greatest Pass under Heaven," is the most iconic landmark of Jiayuguan City and the westernmost major stronghold of the Ming dynasty Great Wall. Founded during the Ming dynasty as a strategic gateway guarding the narrow Hexi Corridor, it marked for centuries the traditional boundary between the Chinese heartland and the western frontier. For travelers retracing the old Silk Road through Gansu, it stands as the defining monument of the region and an essential stop on any northwest China itinerary.
The fortress is a vast rectangular complex of rammed-earth walls, towers, and layered gatehouses, laid out so that visitors pass through successive defensive enclosures before reaching the inner city. Within those walls sit historic structures including the guerrilla general's office and small temples, while the two great gate towers, each crowned with a classical timber pavilion, are among the most photographed features anywhere along the Great Wall. The precision of the plan and the quality of the masonry reveal how seriously the Ming court defended this remote desert corridor.
Much of the fort's power comes from its setting. From the ramparts the snow-capped Qilian Mountains rise to the south, while the Gobi Desert stretches to the horizon in other directions, and standing here it is easy to picture the caravans, soldiers, and exiles who once passed through these gates. The adjacent Great Wall Museum adds valuable historical context for visitors who want to understand the fortress in the broader story of China's frontier defense.
Plan a half-day for the fort itself, or combine it with the nearby Overhanging Great Wall and the First Beacon Tower for a full-day tour of the western Great Wall system. The site is busiest on summer weekends and during Chinese public holidays, so an early arrival means quieter walls and softer desert light. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sun protection and water, and allow time simply to absorb one of the most historic and evocative landmarks on the whole Silk Road.

Jiayuguan Fortress stands on the Gobi some five kilometres west of the city of Jiayuguan in Gansu, backed by the Qilian range to the south and the Black Mountains to the north, at the crossroads of the Silk Road and the Great Wall. It is the western starting point of the Ming Great Wall, answering the eastern Shanhai Pass across the empire, and is hailed as the "Greatest Pass Under Heaven." Founded in 1372 in the Hongwu reign, the fortress took some 168 years to reach its complete form of nested inner, outer and moat defences, with walls rising more than ten metres. In 1987 the Great Wall was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List with Jiayuguan as a core part, and in 1961 the pass was listed among China's first batch of nationally protected cultural relics.

At sunset, wall and snow peak answer each other, and one feels most keenly what Zhang Qian, Xuanzang, Lin Zexu and Zuo Zongtang felt looking back toward China from this gate.
