In the early 1930s Ruijin served as the base of the short-lived Chinese Soviet Republic, and the surrounding countryside preserves the offices, meeting halls, and everyday sites associated with that period. The Red Well is the most famous single object among them, a modest hand-dug well whose story has been told to generations of Chinese schoolchildren, and it sits among exhibits and memorials that explain the wider historical context of the base area.
