The Red Well site, part of the larger "Cradle of the Republic" 5A-level heritage area in Ruijin on Ganzhou's eastern fringe, is a historically significant place tied to the early years of the Chinese Communist movement in the early 1930s. The well itself was dug in 1933 and later named the "Red Well" by local residents, and it stands today within a cluster of protected revolutionary-era sites. For travelers interested in twentieth-century Chinese history, it is one of the most important stops in the region.

In the early 1930s Ruijin served as the base of the short-lived Chinese Soviet Republic, and the surrounding countryside preserves the offices, meeting halls, and everyday sites associated with that period. The Red Well is the most famous single object among them, a modest hand-dug well whose story has been told to generations of Chinese schoolchildren, and it sits among exhibits and memorials that explain the wider historical context of the base area. For international visitors the significance is primarily historical, a window onto a formative chapter of modern China set in a quiet rural landscape.

The site is compact and a visit takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half, moving between the well, the surrounding memorials, and the indoor displays.
