The Chaozhou Museum is the city's principal regional museum and a useful orientation stop for travelers who want a structured introduction to the area before diving into the ancient city itself. Although less famous than Chaozhou's outdoor architectural landmarks, the museum brings together exhibits on the region's archaeology, maritime trade, crafts, and diaspora history under one roof, and it helps frame what you will see at sites like Kaiyuan Temple, Guangji Bridge, and Paifang Street.

The permanent collections typically cover several themes central to Teochew identity. Galleries trace Chaozhou's history from prehistoric settlement through the Tang and Song dynasties, when the city grew into a significant port and administrative center, and onward through the Ming and Qing. Objects on display include ceramics, brick and stone carvings, religious statuary, calligraphy, and household items from elite Teochew families.

A second major thread is decorative craft. Chaozhou is celebrated for several distinctive folk arts, including wood carving (often gilded and densely layered), porcelain, embroidery, and the painted ridge plasterwork seen on local temples and ancestral halls. Seeing these crafts gathered and explained in a museum setting makes the same motifs easier to recognize when you later encounter them on the roofs of Kaiyuan Temple or the lintels of clan halls in the old town.

A third focus is the Teochew diaspora. Chaozhou was one of the most important sources of Chinese emigration to Southeast Asia, and exhibits explore how Teochew merchants, laborers, and families built communities in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and beyond, and how their wealth and ideas flowed back into the home city. For foreign visitors, this is often the most surprising and globally relevant part of the collection.

Because exhibits are primarily in Chinese, the museum rewards visitors who travel with a translation app or a guide. Allow an unhurried hour, ideally near the start of a Chaozhou visit, so the context can sharpen the rest of the trip. As a primer on the city's craft, trade, and diaspora heritage, the museum is a solid, quietly valuable stop.
