О Древняя деревня Лунху

Longhu Ancient Village is a quiet, under-visited settlement south of Chaozhou's urban core and one of the better-preserved Teochew market towns in eastern Guangdong. Founded during the Southern Song dynasty, it has more than a thousand years of continuous history and still retains over a hundred traditional buildings within its old grid. For travelers interested in vernacular architecture and the rural Teochew landscape, it is a rewarding half-day excursion.

The village's layout follows a classic Lingnan market-town plan: a central commercial street runs lengthwise, crossed by narrow residential alleys that once organized households by surname and trade. Along the main street stand ancestral halls, temples, study halls, and shophouses with the distinctive grey-brick walls, upturned tiled roofs, and painted ridge plasterwork characteristic of Teochew building. Unlike more touristed water towns in Jiangnan, Longhu has not been heavily commercialized, and many of the carvings and inscriptions remain in their original, if weathered, state.

Walking through the village, the appeal is in the texture: worn flagstones, lichen-covered walls, door gods faded by decades of sun and rain, and small courtyards where laundry still hangs between granite posts. There are no large museums here; instead, the village itself is the exhibit. A few family-run shops sell tea, snacks, and local handicrafts, and on a weekday you may encounter more residents than tourists.

Longhu is easy to combine with a wider Teochew itinerary that includes Chaozhou Ancient City, Paifang Street, and the Han River sites. It appeals particularly to photographers, slow walkers, and anyone who prefers their history atmospheric rather than curated. As a surviving example of a Southern Song-era Teochew market village, Longhu offers a quieter, more intimate counterpoint to the busy streets of central Chaozhou.

Культурное наследие

Longhu Ancient Village sits on the west bank of the lower Han River, with over a thousand years of history and more than a hundred surviving old buildings. Laid out on a grid of 'three streets and six lanes', it is scattered with grand mansions, ancestral halls, study halls and shops, its deep courtyards shaded by thousand-year banyans — a miniature old town, counted among Guangdong's ten most beautiful ancient villages. Once a riverside hub of Chaozhou commerce and learning, the woodcarving, stone carving and ceramic inlay over its gateways record its old prosperity and scholarly air.

Посещение: To enter Longhu is to step into the life of the old Chaoshan gentry: deep flagstone lanes, gatehouses with finely carved bracketing, solemn ancestral halls. With less of the old town's clamour and more quiet simplicity, it is best taken slowly — beneath the old banyans and before the ancient doorways, savouring the Chaozhou tradition of clans living together and families joining farming with study.
