Founding

Lei Yunshang was founded in 1734 by the noted Suzhou physician Lei Dasheng (courtesy name Yunshang), who opened the Songfentang pharmacy. In modern times it established branches in Shanghai and shifted its base there, becoming a medicine name shared by Suzhou and Shanghai.

What made it famous

Lei Yunshang is known for compounding remedies from the Wu-school medical tradition, above all the famed Liushen Wan, and was a major name in Shanghai's late-Qing and Republican-era pharmacy trade.

Signature craft

The house keeps to traditional methods of processing herbs and making pills, powders and pastes, with exacting standards in sourcing, formulation and pill-rolling—one of the leading time-honoured names of the medicine trade.
