Founding
Laofanzhi Wanying Shenqu was created by Wu Yifei in 1733, during the Yongzheng reign, and ran its shop within Quanzhou's old city for nearly three centuries.
What made it famous
Tradition holds it earned imperial commendation in the Qianlong era and the honorific name Wanying ('cure-all') under the Guangxu emperor, becoming a household remedy in southern Fujian and the diaspora.
Signature craft
It blends many medicinal ingredients, fermented, sun-dried, slow-baked over a gentle fire and aged for months; the preparation method is listed as intangible cultural heritage.
Cultural standing
Laofanzhi was recognised as a China Time-honored Brand in 2011 and is still produced by a Quanzhou pharmaceutical maker.
