The Tianmen Mountain Cableway is the long passenger cable car that carries visitors from a station in downtown Zhangjiajie up to the summit of Tianmen Mountain, and the ride is itself considered one of the signature experiences of a visit to the city. Stretching over a distance of roughly seven kilometers and climbing more than twelve hundred meters in elevation, the cableway is one of the longest passenger ropeways of its kind in the world, and it provides a slow, panoramic ascent from the city basin to the top of the Wuling range.

The ride moves over the urban grid of Zhangjiajie, across the famous winding mountain road below, and up through the forested slopes to the summit station, with the landscape shifting dramatically over the course of the journey. On a clear day the views extend far across the city and the surrounding ridges, and on misty days the upper section of the ride passes through cloud, giving the arrival at the summit an otherworldly quality. Because the cableway is the primary way most visitors reach the summit, queues build up sharply through the morning, especially during weekends and Chinese public holidays, and the queue for the descent can be equally long in the late afternoon. Many experienced travelers time their arrival for the first departure of the day or late in the afternoon to avoid the longest waits.
