운룡산

Yunlong Mountain is the long, dragon-backed ridge that rises to the east of Yunlong Lake in the heart of Xuzhou, a low, nine-peaked hill whose winding silhouette gives the mountain its name, "Cloud Dragon Mountain." Although its summit stands only a hundred and forty-odd meters above sea level, the mountain is one of the most beloved scenic and religious sites in northern Jiangsu, and the single best place in Xuzhou to take in both the city and the lake from above.

The mountain's cultural significance far outweighs its modest height. Its slopes are dotted with Buddhist temples, pavilions, inscribed steles, and shaded walkways, with the most famous landmark being the Xinghua Temple, whose main hall encloses a giant rock-carved Buddha dating back more than a thousand years. The Song dynasty poet Su Shi, who served as prefect of Xuzhou, was a frequent visitor, and his prose piece "Record of the Crane Release Pavilion" is still associated with a small pavilion on the ridge, the original stele preserved on site.

A stone-paved path leads up from the western foot of the mountain, switchbacking through groves of pine and cypress, past shrines and viewing pavilions, to the main ridgeline. From the top, the entire sweep of Yunlong Lake opens to the west, the Xuzhou Museum compound sits just to the north, and the old city spreads out to the south and east. On a clear day, the view extends across the Huaihai plain to a hazy horizon.

Most visitors spend two to three hours walking the main circuit, combining the temples, the inscribed steles, and the viewpoints. The cable car running up the slope offers an easier option for travelers who want the views without the climb, and a small network of side trails leads to quieter corners of the ridge for those who prefer solitude. Early mornings are particularly rewarding, with local residents practicing tai chi on the terraces and the lake often veiled in mist.

For travelers planning a day around central Xuzhou, Yunlong Mountain is the natural anchor. It sits within walking distance of the lake, the museum, and the Hubushan historic quarter, and a loop combining all four offers the most concentrated taste of the city's scenery, history, and daily life that Xuzhou has to offer. Sunrise from the eastern peak is the classic image of the mountain, and worth an early alarm.
