구산한묘 소개

Tucked into the wooded slopes of Guishan (Turtle Mountain) in the western suburbs of Xuzhou, the Guishan Han Tomb is one of the most remarkable Western Han royal tombs ever excavated in China. It is the joint burial site of Liu Zhu, the sixth Chu king of the Western Han, and his wife, hand-carved deep into the belly of the mountain in the first century BC. For travelers mapping out Han Dynasty history across China, this is a name to remember alongside Mancheng and the imperial tombs near Xi'an.

The engineering alone is staggering. Two parallel tomb passages, each cut to extraordinary precision out of solid rock, lead into fifteen interconnected chambers that recreate the layout of the Chu palace above ground: living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, a chariot garage, and a bathroom with a stone drainage channel still visible. The passages are so straight and so level that scholars still debate how miners working with iron tools alone could have achieved such accuracy more than two thousand years ago.

What gives the site its mystique are the unsolved puzzles that guides love to dwell on. The seams between the giant blocking stones fit so tightly that a coin will not slide through; the orientation of the two passages points with a precision measured in fractions of a degree; and the identity and timing of certain burials remain contested. These are the so-called "four mysteries of Guishan," and they are part of why the tomb draws both casual visitors and archaeology enthusiasts from overseas.

Plan your visit as a half-day excursion from central Xuzhou, combining it easily with the nearby Xuzhou Han stone relief gallery. The chambers are cool and dim, so bring a light layer even in summer, and wear shoes with good grip since the rock floor can be damp. Information panels inside are bilingual, but reading up on Western Han Chu kings beforehand makes the experience far richer. Photography is permitted in most areas, though flash may be restricted near fragile carvings.

For independent travelers exploring Jiangsu beyond Nanjing and Suzhou, the Guishan Han Tomb offers a concentrated dose of the Han Dynasty heritage that defines Xuzhou. It is a chance to stand inside a mountain and feel the ambition of a kingdom that, two millennia ago, made this corner of eastern China its royal seat.

문화유산

The Guishan Han tomb is the joint burial of Liu Zhu, the sixth Chu king of the Western Han, and his consort, hewn during the height of Western Han power; cut entirely by hand into the hill, it has two passage ways and fifteen chambers on a vast and finely built scale, and four unsolved puzzles still draw visitors from home and abroad. It is an outstanding example of Xuzhou's Han tombs and a Major National Cultural Heritage Site.

관람 안내: Stepping into the deep passages one sees two corridors cut with near-modern precision, the chisel marks on the chamber walls, and the puzzles that remain unsolved; the cold stone halls set against the grand burial scale of a Han king leave one marvelling at the quarrying skill of two thousand years ago.
