사자산 초왕릉

The Lion Hill Chu King Tomb, carved into the slopes of Lion Hill on the eastern edge of central Xuzhou, is one of the most dramatic Western Han royal tombs open to visitors in China. Built for a second-century BC Chu king of the Western Han, it is the centerpiece of the wider Han Culture Scenic Area and a must-see for travelers charting the great Han royal tomb sites of the lower Yellow River and Huai river basins.

The tomb's scale is what first strikes the visitor. A long, sloping passage cut into the rock leads down into a sprawling underground complex of chambers, including a giant main burial hall, side chambers for attendants and grave goods, and a treasury. The engineering ambition on display is staggering: the passage alone runs for dozens of meters into the hillside, and the main hall could once have held an entire household's worth of ceremonial objects, chariots, and lacquered furniture.

Part of what makes Shizishan so compelling is the air of unfinished mystery that surrounds it. Archaeologists have found signs that the tomb may have been hurriedly completed, or even partially robbed shortly after burial, and the identity of the king himself has been the subject of long debate. The accompanying terracotta warrior pits, discovered nearby and now housed in a dedicated museum within the same scenic area, originally held thousands of small-scale figurines, and are sometimes compared to Xi'an's famous army, though on a very different scale and with their own distinctive style.

Visitors access the tomb via a walkway that descends through the rock-cut passage into the main chambers, where bilingual panels explain the layout, the burial customs of the Chu kings, and the finds recovered from the site. The atmosphere inside is cool and dim year-round, a useful escape from Xuzhou's summer heat. Allow at least an hour to explore the tomb itself, and more to combine it with the adjacent warrior museum and the Han stone relief corridor.

For independent travelers, the Lion Hill Chu King Tomb is the single most atmospheric stop on Xuzhou's Han circuit. It rewards visitors who have already toured the Xuzhou Museum, where the recovered treasures from the tomb are displayed, and who can picture the underground palace as it would have looked when the Chu kings were laid to rest here more than two thousand years ago.
