청장고원 자연박물관 소개
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Museum of Natural History, located in the biotech industrial park in northern Xining, is one of the largest natural-history museums in western China and the single best introduction to the geology, biology, and climate of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. For independent travelers planning to travel further west into Qinghai, Tibet, or Sichuan's Tibetan areas, a few hours here enormously enriches what you will later see on the ground.
The museum spans three floors and is organized into 24 thematic exhibition halls, with names that read like an index of plateau science: "Tibetan Treasures," "Salt Lake Wonder," "Blue Sea," "Plateau Uplift," "Snow and Ice Zone," and so on. Exhibits cover the tectonic forces that built the plateau, the glaciers and permafrost that shape its hydrology, the great river systems — Yangtze, Yellow, Mekong, Salween, Indus, Brahmaputra — that rise on it, and the unique plants and animals that have evolved to survive at high altitude.
The most visually memorable displays are the diorama-style habitat recreations: walk-through scenes of alpine meadow, salt lake, glacier, and high-steppe grassland, each populated with taxidermy specimens and reconstructed landscapes. Specimens of iconic plateau wildlife — snow leopards, Tibetan antelope, wild yaks, black-necked cranes, lammergeiers — are presented alongside the smaller mammals, fish, and birds that make up most of the plateau's actual biodiversity.
Other sections focus on the mineral and salt resources that have shaped Qinghai's economy: spectacular crystalline salt formations from the Qarhan Salt Lake and other regional playas, mineral specimens from the Kunlun and Qilian mountains, and displays explaining the chemistry of the plateau's brine lakes, which are major global sources of lithium and potassium.
For most visitors the museum takes two to three hours to see properly, and the interpretive materials — while primarily in Chinese — are supplemented by enough visual content to reward non-Chinese readers. Combine it with a half-day in northern Xining.
For anyone planning to visit Qinghai Lake, the source-of-rivers region of Sanjiangyuan, or any of the Tibetan Autonomous Prefectures of Qinghai, the museum is genuinely valuable preparation. The plateau is much easier to appreciate when you understand how it was made and what lives there.
