팔괘전 소개

The Bagua Fields — the "Eight Trigrams Fields" — are a naturally formed set of terraced fields tucked into the karst basin of the Wanfenglin scenic area near Xingyi in southwestern Guizhou. Viewed from the surrounding hills, the field pattern radiates outward in eight roughly symmetrical sections divided by low stone walls, resembling the bagua symbol used in Chinese cosmology and Daoist iconography. The combination of human agriculture and karst landform makes this one of the most photographed individual spots in the wider Wanfenglin area.

The bagua shape is not entirely accidental. Karst depressions called dolines naturally create circular or bowl-shaped clearings between the conical peaks, and over centuries Bouyei farmers have built low stone walls along the existing contour lines to retain soil and water for rice and vegetable cultivation. The result, seen from above, is a striking geometric pattern that only reveals itself fully from elevated viewpoints along the Wanfenglin sightseeing road.

The fields are a working agricultural landscape, not a formal garden. Depending on the season, visitors might see flooded paddies reflecting the karst peaks (spring), lush green rice (summer), golden harvest stubble (autumn), or bare brown earth with winter vegetables. Each season gives a different mood to the same viewpoint, and local photographers have made the site a popular subject in Chinese landscape photography in recent decades.

For travelers, the Bagua Fields work best as a quick photo stop on a half-day bike or electric-scooter loop around the Wanfenglin valley. There are several established viewpoints along the main road where the pattern is most clearly visible; the fields themselves are fenced working land, so most visitors admire the design from above rather than walking through it.

The fields are a small attraction by themselves — the appeal is more about the cleverness of the landform-to-field conversion than about any single dramatic view. But combined with the surrounding peak forest, Bouyei villages, and other karst features, they are part of what makes the Wanfenglin basin such a coherent destination for independent travelers who like to mix light outdoor activity with cultural and rural landscape photography.
