Jilongbao Resort is one of the more surreal sights in southwest China: a fairytale Gothic castle, complete with red turrets, pointed roofs, and a European silhouette, sitting on a small karst island in the middle of Wanfeng Lake near Xingyi. Locals call it "China's Neuschwanstein," and the comparison to Bavaria's most famous castle is deliberate — the resort was built as a deliberately European-style fantasy, surrounded on all sides by Chinese karst peaks.

The castle is connected to the shore by a single narrow bridge, so it appears to float on the water when viewed from the surrounding peaks. Inside, the building functions as an integrated resort hotel with rooms, restaurants, function space, and leisure facilities; the design combines Gothic-arch windows, stone cladding, and decorative battlements with modern interiors that feel closer to a mainstream Chinese hotel than to a European schloss. The upper floors have panoramic views over the lake and the rows of karst cones marching away toward Guangxi.

For most visitors the experience is about the exterior and the setting rather than the architecture itself. From the lake, the castle's red spires are an unmistakable landmark; from the elevated viewpoints around the lake, the whole scene — fairy-tale castle, emerald water, thousands of peaks — looks almost computer-generated. Cruise boats on Wanfeng Lake pass close to the island and pause for photos.

Jilongbao markets itself as a destination for couples, weddings, and family photography, and the grounds are designed with that in mind — formal gardens, viewpoint pavilions, and decorative lighting in the evening. The resort's interior offerings are typical of a Chinese mid-range resort: restaurants, karaoke, kids' play zones, and meeting rooms, rather than anything tied to the local Bouyei culture.

For most foreign travelers the right move is to enjoy Jilongbao as a photo stop and curiosity rather than as a base — Wanfenglin and the karst landscapes around Xingyi are the main event. But as a piece of regional quirk, it is genuinely memorable: an unexpected collision of European romantic-revival architecture and southern Chinese karst geography that you will not see anywhere else in Guizhou.
