West Baiyanggou (Xi Baiyang Gou, "Western Poplar Valley") is an alpine valley scenic area on the northern slope of the Tian Shan south of Urumqi, Xinjiang, lying within the wider mountain recreation belt that includes the Tianshan Grand Canyon and the Silk Road Mountain Resort at Shuixigou. It is one of several parallel valleys cut into the range by north-flowing tributaries of the Urumqi river, and it offers a representative cross-section of the regional mountain landscape within a relatively compact visit.

The valley rises from the basin floor through a sequence of altitudinal belts. The lower section is forested with spruce and larch, with the trees opening periodically into subalpine meadow, and the higher ground above the tree line gives onto exposed ridge and scree with views south toward the Bogda massif. A clear mountain stream runs the length of the valley, cutting in places into small gorges and dropping over a series of low falls. The light and the air temperature change quickly with altitude, and the contrast with the heat of the basin is the main reason the valley has historically been used as a summer grazing and recreation area.

The developed scenic area includes a parking and ticketing area at the valley mouth, walking routes along the main stream, and a network of side trails that climb to higher meadows and viewpoints. Some of the side routes reach the ridge crests that separate Baiyanggou from the adjacent valleys, and from these points the panoramic view over the northern slope of the Tian Shan is one of the most complete available on a day trip from Urumqi.

For international travelers West Baiyanggou is one of several interchangeable high-valley options on the Urumqi mountain circuit, and the choice between them is usually practical, based on relative crowding on a given day, rather than substantive. A visit typically takes three to four hours and is best paired with an overnight in the Shuixigou area or with one of the other scenic areas in the same belt for a full mountain day.

The main visitor season runs from late spring through early autumn, with the alpine meadows at their peak in July and August and the autumn larch color at its strongest in late September and early October. Warm layers, sun protection, and water are essential, and visitors should be aware that weather in the high valleys can change quickly even in midsummer.
