The Silk Road Mountain Resort ski area (Sichou Zhi Lu Shandi Dujia Qu Huaxuechang) sits in the Tian Shan north of Urumqi county, within the larger Silk Road Mountain Resort at Shuixigou town, roughly thirty-eight kilometers south of the city. It is one of the principal ski resorts in northwest China and has been developed as an international-standard destination, with certification from the International Ski Federation and a track record of hosting national-level competition.

The resort occupies a north-facing slope of the Tian Shan between roughly 1,800 and 2,500 meters in altitude, with cold, dry continental air that produces a high percentage of sunny days through the winter and preserves light, powdery snow on the runs. The total skiable terrain extends to more than 1.7 million square meters, making it one of the largest ski areas in China by slope area, and includes several runs rated among the most challenging in the country, among them the Xuanzang and Aiwen avenues named for historical Silk Road figures.

The lift network includes three high-speed detachable lifts, one of them an eight-person gondola that runs from the base area to the summit ridge at about 2,500 meters. The gondola is among the longest and highest-vertical ski lifts in any Chinese resort and is used in both winter and summer, when it carries hikers and sightseers up to the alpine meadows and the ridge view over the Bogda range. A base area of European-style timber construction includes a ski school, equipment rental, restaurants, and a hotel.

The winter season typically runs from late November through early April, with the best snow conditions in January and February. The resort caters to a wide range of abilities, with beginner areas and a snow-tubing park alongside the advanced runs, and the ski school offers instruction in both Chinese and, by arrangement, English. In the summer months the same site functions as a mountain retreat, with hiking trails, a grass sliding area, and cool-weather relief from the heat of the basin.

For international travelers the resort is a winter destination rather than a stop on a Silk Road itinerary, but it is the most accessible single-day ski excursion from Urumqi and is paired naturally with the broader Shuixigou resort area, which includes hot-spring hotels and the Tianshan Grand Canyon scenic area nearby.
