투위거우 대협곡

The Tuyug Grand Canyon (Tuyugou Da Xiagu) is a narrow erosional gorge at the eastern end of the Flaming Mountains in Shanshan County, east of Turpan, Xinjiang. Cut by a seasonal river through alternating layers of red and yellow sandstone, the canyon is one of the most visually dramatic natural features on the eastern Turpan circuit and is usually visited as part of the wider Tuyugou scenic area.

The canyon extends for several kilometers between sheer cliff walls that rise to a hundred meters in places, with the rock faces sculpted by wind and water into alcoves, fins, and smooth flow-forms. The layered strata record the same geological history visible across the Flaming Mountains as a whole, and the color of the stone deepens to an intense red-orange in late afternoon light. The dry bed of the seasonal river runs along the canyon floor, flanked in places by a narrow strip of poplars and irrigated fields that mark the small oasis at the canyon's mouth.

Walking into the canyon from the village of Tuyug Mazar, the walls close in quickly and the microclimate shifts, with noticeably cooler air and sharper acoustics. The geology is the main attraction here rather than built heritage, although the cliffs also hold a small number of cave shrines associated with the nearby Tuyugou Thousand Buddha Caves, the Buddhist cave temple site that predates the more famous Bezeklik complex. The canyon has historically been considered a spiritually charged landscape by local communities, a reputation tied to the religious sites at its mouth.

The standard visit combines the canyon walk with the adjacent historic village and the Thousand Buddha Caves, and most travelers spend two to three hours in the combined area. The canyon itself can be walked in either direction, and the most rewarding section for photography is the first kilometer from the village, where the walls are highest and the contrast with the green oasis floor is strongest.

Tuyug Grand Canyon is usually paired with the Gaochang ruins, the Bezeklik Caves, and the Flaming Mountains on a full-day eastern Turpan itinerary. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for walking; summer afternoons in the canyon are extremely hot, and flash rainfall in the mountains can occasionally send water down the dry bed, so visitors should check conditions before walking far from the entrance.
