화염산 풍경구 소개

The Flaming Mountains (Huoyanshan) are a striking red sandstone ridge running east-west along the northern edge of the Turpan Basin in Xinjiang, China. Rising sharply from the desert floor, the barren, eroded cliffs take on an intense reddish-orange hue under the afternoon sun, giving the range its fiery name. The mountains feature prominently in the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West," in which they appear as an impassable wall of flame that the monkey-hero Sun Wukong must extinguish, and this literary association continues to draw travelers from across the country.

Geologically, the range is part of the Tian Shan fold system and stretches roughly one hundred kilometers in length. The bare rock faces, deep gullies, and layered strata record millions of years of tectonic uplift and desert erosion. Surface temperatures on the sun-exposed rock can climb to extreme levels in summer, and the surrounding basin is among the hottest places in China, a result of its deep inland position and low elevation.

Despite the harsh appearance at the surface, the mountains sit above the network of underground karez channels that traditional oasis farmers have used for centuries to tap snowmelt from the Tian Shan. The contrast between the scorched ridgeline and the green vineyards and fields on the basin floor is one of the defining images of Turpan and is repeated across the eastern circuit of the region.

At the scenic area entrance, visitors find a visitor center, shaded walkways, and a large thermometer that has become a popular photo landmark. Walking paths lead out to viewpoints over the red rock formations, and several spots illustrate scenes from "Journey to the West" through sculpture and signage.

Travelers usually pair a stop here with nearby Grape Valley, the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, or the ancient city of Gaochang, all of which lie within a short drive. The best light for photography comes in the early morning and late afternoon, when the rock glows deepest. Midday summer visits are best kept brief due to the heat, and most international tourists pass through in spring or autumn on a Turpan-loop itinerary that follows the old Silk Road.
