Set in the heart of Shenyang's old city, Marshal Zhang's Mansion is the former residence of Zhang Xueliang, the Northeastern warlord who made world headlines in 1936 when he kidnapped Chiang Kai-shek in the Xi'an Incident. The mansion is one of the best preserved modern political residences in China and a national-level protected cultural heritage site.

Construction began in 1914 under his father Zhang Zuolin, the powerful warlord who controlled Manchuria in the early Republican era. Over the following two decades the compound grew to cover 53,000 square metres and now encompasses three connected courtyards, the striking Daqing Tower, the smaller Xiaoqing Tower, a Guandi Temple, the Red Building complex, the separate residence of Zhang's companion Zhao Yidi, the former office of the Frontier Industry Bank, and the former staff headquarters.

The architecture reflects the collision of cultures that defined early twentieth-century Shenyang: traditional Chinese quad-courtyard layout is paired with European-style stone façades, art-deco interiors, and Republican-era office wings. Inside, the rooms are dressed with period furniture, family photographs, and bilingual exhibition panels that walk visitors through the Zhang family saga, the politics of the Northeastern Army, and the dramatic events of the Xi'an Incident that reshaped modern Chinese history.

Allow at least ninety minutes to walk the full route, which is well marked and partly bilingual. The mansion sits a few minutes on foot from the Shenyang Imperial Palace, making it an obvious pairing on any walking itinerary of the historic Fangcheng district. For travellers interested in China's transition from the late Qing to the Republican era, this is one of the most rewarding historical sites in northeast China.
