Hongshan Forest Zoo occupies a wooded hillside in the northern part of Nanjing, set between the city's urban grid and the green slopes that lead up toward Purple Mountain to the east. It is the principal zoo in the Jiangsu provincial capital and, in recent years, has built a reputation within China as one of the more progressive urban zoos, particularly for its efforts to move away from the concrete-and-cage display style of older Chinese zoos toward more naturalistic, forested enclosures that take advantage of the site's existing tree cover and rolling terrain.

The zoo's collection spans a broad range of native Chinese species — including giant pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, red pandas, and cranes — alongside animals from elsewhere in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Enclosures are arranged along paths that wind up and over the forested hill, so that a visit feels as much like a walk through a hilly park as a conventional zoo circuit, with many of the animals visible through glass viewing areas set into planted, open-air habitats. The local emphasis on environmental enrichment and on signage that frames animals in their ecological context rather than as pure spectacle has drawn favorable attention, and the zoo has become a model that other Chinese institutions have begun to study.

For foreign visitors, Hongshan is a good option for families traveling with children or for travelers interested in how Chinese urban zoos are evolving. A typical visit fills a half-day, and the hilly layout means comfortable walking shoes and a willingness to climb some stairs are worth bringing. The setting — forested slopes with the towers of central Nanjing visible through the trees in places — gives the zoo a more relaxed atmosphere than its downtown counterparts in other Chinese cities. It is easily combined with a visit to the Ming city wall or the lakeside areas of northern Nanjing, and it offers a low-key change of pace from the city's heavier historical sites for visitors wanting a slower, greener afternoon.
