The Grand Bao'en Temple Ruins Park preserves the archaeological remains of one of the most famous Buddhist monasteries of imperial Nanjing and presents them within a purpose-built modern heritage complex on the historic Changganli district south of the old city wall. The original temple traced its roots back to the early centuries of Chinese Buddhism in the Wu kingdom, and over the following millennium it was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt under different names before being raised to its greatest prominence under the Yongle Emperor of the Ming dynasty, who sponsored a vast reconstruction in honor of his parents.

The centerpiece of the Ming-era complex was a towering pagoda of brick and glazed, polychrome tile — celebrated in early modern European accounts of China as one of the wonders of the world — which stood until its destruction in the nineteenth century. The current park, opened to the public in the twenty-first century and built directly over the excavated temple foundations, protects the underground relic deposits, monastery foundations, and the base of the lost pagoda, while a modern reconstruction of the pagoda now rises above the site. Within the ruins-level museum, visitors walk among the excavated structures beneath glass-floor walkways, with multimedia displays interpreting the site's religious significance and the long history of Buddhist worship on the spot.

For foreign visitors, the Ruins Park offers something genuinely unusual in Nanjing: a major religious site presented through contemporary archaeological and architectural interpretation rather than through a restored traditional building. The contrast between the ancient foundations below and the modern glass-and-steel structure above is part of the experience, and the displays on the original Ming pagoda and its earlier incarnations help convey why this spot was so important to Buddhist Nanjing. A visit typically fills a couple of hours and pairs naturally with the adjacent Zhonghua Gate and the old city wall, since both sit within the southern heritage zone of the city. The site is well-suited to travelers interested in religious history, archaeology, and the more experimental corner of contemporary Chinese heritage presentation.
