동방불도

Oriental Buddha Park sits adjacent to the Leshan Giant Buddha within the same Lingyun mountain range and shares the protected zone of the UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Built as a large-scale complement to the Giant Buddha, the park assembles an extensive collection of cliff-carved Buddhist sculptures and cave shrines laid out across nearly a thousand mu of forested hillside. The concept fills a gap that the Giant Buddha alone could not, surrounding the colossal figure with the kind of supporting grotto complex found at China's great classical cave temple sites.

The heart of the park is the Ten Thousand Buddha Cave, a long underground passage carved with dense ranks of statues and guarded at its entrance by the Four Heavenly Kings. Within the complex, visitors encounter a seated Shakyamuni carved in the round, a reclining Buddha that follows the natural contour of the ridge, a graceful Guanyin figure sometimes likened to an Eastern Venus, and a vast Yakushi healing Buddha. The art draws on the vocabulary of the Tang dynasty sculpture tradition, reimagined in a modern, unified setting.

The works were created by a team of sculptors from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute over many years, using traditional cliff-carving techniques rather than cast or assembled forms. Each figure was cut directly from the native red sandstone, demanding the same one-pass precision that the ancient carvers of the Giant Buddha had to master, with no margin for correction once a chisel blow had been struck. The result reads less like a reproduction and more like a continuation of an unfinished classical project.

The grounds are shaded by camphor woodland, with paths winding between pavilions and partly hidden figures that emerge from the greenery.
