The Dongfeng Weir and Thousand Buddha Cliffs site is one of the least expected of Leshan's World Heritage landmarks and a destination that rewards travelers willing to venture beyond the Giant Buddha and Mount Emei. The weir itself, first built in the early Qing dynasty in the seventeenth century and in continuous use for more than three centuries, is a remarkable piece of premodern hydraulic engineering that still irrigates the farmland of the surrounding plain. Together with the Giant Buddha and Mount Emei, it forms the third World Heritage property of the wider Leshan region.

The Thousand Buddha Cliffs portion of the site is a riverside rock face carved with dense ranks of Buddhist niches, votive figures, and inscriptions that reflect the devotional culture of the same watershed that produced the Giant Buddha. The carvings extend along the cliff in a sequence of grottoes and individual statues, some sheltered by later pavilions and others open to the weather, documenting centuries of religious and artistic activity along this stretch of river. The contrast between the working canal infrastructure of the weir and the religious sculpture of the cliffs gives the site a layered character that the more famous Leshan attractions cannot match.

A visit here is quieter and more contemplative than the crowded viewing platforms around the Giant Buddha. Paths lead along the canal and the cliff face, with viewpoints that take in both the engineering of the weir and the detail of the carvings, and the surrounding farmland gives a sense of the agricultural landscape that the irrigation system has sustained for centuries. Interpretive displays help visitors understand how the water is still managed and how the sculpture relates to the wider Buddhist geography of the Leshan region.
