Central Avenue is Harbin's most famous pedestrian street and one of the clearest surviving symbols of the city's early twentieth-century development as a hub shaped by Russian and European influence. Paved with distinctive square stone blocks and lined on both sides with buildings in Baroque, Renaissance, Byzantine, and other European architectural styles, the street has long served as the commercial and social heart of the city, particularly the historic Daoli district.
Walking down Central Avenue today, visitors pass a dense mix of shops, bakeries, ice cream vendors, cafes, and restaurants housed inside these historic façades, creating an atmosphere that feels distinct from most other Chinese city centers. The street is especially popular for people-watching and for sampling classic Harbin treats, from Russian-style bread to the city's beloved soft-serve ice cream, which locals famously enjoy even in the depths of winter. Street musicians, photographers, and seasonal decorations add to the lively pedestrian atmosphere throughout the year.
In winter, Central Avenue takes on an extra layer of appeal as ice sculptures and festive lighting are often installed along its length, tying the street into the broader citywide celebration of Harbin's ice and snow season. In warmer months, the street becomes a shaded, relaxed promenade for evening strolls, with outdoor seating spilling out from cafes and restaurants along the way.
Because it connects directly toward Sophia Square and the riverside area near the Songhua River, Central Avenue functions as a natural spine for exploring central Harbin on foot, and most visitors end up walking its length more than once during a stay. It is easily combined with a visit to Saint Sophia Cathedral, and its atmosphere, food, and architecture make it one of the most rewarding places in the city simply to wander without a fixed itinerary.

Central Street was laid out in 1900, first called "China Street" and renamed Central Street in 1925; over fourteen hundred metres long, it is the busiest century-old commercial street in Harbin. The roadway is paved with "loaf stones"—square granite blocks shaped like small Russian loaves—and more than seventy European-style buildings line its sides in Renaissance, Baroque, Eclectic and Art Nouveau styles, earning it the name "Asia's First Street" and concentrating the "Eastern Paris" face of the city.
관람 안내: Strolling the loaf-stone roadway, European cupolas and carved façades unfold one after another like an open-air museum of continental architecture; the milk of a Modern ice cream bar, the garlic of Qiulin red sausage and the tune of a street accordion mingle in the air, and at the street's end the Flood Control Monument faces the Songhua River, the best place to take in Harbin's foreign flavour.
