The 816 Project (816 Underground Nuclear Engineering Facility) is one of China's most astonishing Cold War-era monuments, hidden deep inside a mountain in Fuling District, Chongqing. Conceived in 1966 under the ultra-secret "Third Front" defense campaign, it was designed as a subterranean plutonium-production complex — an entire atomic reactor and chemical processing plant carved into the limestone of Mount Jindiao. For eighteen years, more than sixty thousand engineers, soldiers, and laborers worked in absolute secrecy, excavating a labyrinth of caverns, tunnels, and shafts before the project was abruptly halted in the early 1980s without ever reaching full operation.

Today the declassified site is a museum and a sobering window into an era when geopolitical tension drove extraordinary industrial ambition. The numbers are staggering: a total excavated area of over a hundred thousand square meters, a central hall nearly eighty meters tall, and a network of eighteen large chambers connected by more than a hundred passages, adits, and vertical shafts. Visitors walk through dimly lit corridors past reactor pits, control rooms, and giant ducting, gaining a real sense of the engineering ambition — and human cost — that defined the Third Front movement.

For foreign travelers, the 816 Project offers something genuinely rare: a chance to step inside a massive, secret military installation repurposed as a heritage site. It is often compared to underground cities and has earned evocative nicknames such as "the Three Gorges inside a cave" and "the Great Wall buried in the mountain." The atmosphere is eerie and awe-inspiring in equal measure.

Practical planning helps: the facility is in Chongqing's Fuling District, and reaching it usually involves a long drive from the city center, so it pairs well with other Fuling-area stops. Inside, temperatures stay cool year-round, so a light layer is welcome even in summer. Allow roughly two hours to explore, and consider hiring a local guide or joining a tour to decode the historical context — without it, much of the significance of the rusting machinery and cavernous halls is easy to miss.
