대족석각

The Dazu Rock Carvings, located in Dazu District west of Chongqing's urban core, are one of China's great Buddhist sculptural ensembles and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spanning more than seventy-five protected sites across the district and containing upward of fifty thousand individual figures carved into sandstone cliffs, they represent the last great flowering of Chinese rock-carving art, produced from the seventh century onward and reaching their peak under the Song dynasty between the tenth and thirteenth centuries.

The two principal clusters most visitors see are Baodingshan and Beishan. Baodingshan, the more ambitious, was the life's work of a single Buddhist monk named Zhao Zhifeng, who over some seventy years oversaw the carving of an integrated sculptural program covering a kilometer-long cliff. The reliefs here are unusual in their narrative ambition: whole sutras are illustrated in densely populated tableaux, with scenes of everyday life, judgment, hell, and enlightenment running together in a continuous visual sermon. The most celebrated piece, the reclining Buddha entering nirvana, stretches for over thirty meters in serene, half-lidded repose.

Beishan, by contrast, is more intimate and more refined — a curving cliff of hundreds of small niche reliefs commissioned by lay devotees over centuries. The quality of the carving here, particularly the delicate treatment of halos, drapery, and facial features, is often singled out by art historians as the high point of Song-era sculpture. Together, Baodingshan and Beishan reveal a tradition that synthesized Indian, Central Asian, and native Chinese iconography into something wholly original.

For travelers, Dazu makes an excellent long day trip from Chongqing, or an overnight stop for those who want to explore the smaller, less-visited sites at Shimen and Shizhuan as well. Comfortable shoes and a half-day minimum at Baodingshan are recommended, since the sculptural narrative rewards slow reading. Foreign visitors will get the most from the site by hiring a local guide or studying the iconography in advance — the carvings were designed to teach, and their meaning unfolds best with context.
