해방비 보행가 소개
Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street is the commercial heart of Chongqing and one of the busiest shopping districts in southwest China, centered on the Liberation Monument (Jiefangbei) — a squat, clock-topped obelisk that is the symbolic center of the city. The broad, vehicle-free avenue is lined with department stores, luxury boutiques, shopping malls, hotels, and a dense concentration of restaurants and snack stalls, stretching outward from the monument through the surrounding lanes of the Yuzhong peninsula.
The monument at the center is Chongqing's most important civic landmark. Originally built during the war years to commemorate Sun Yat-sen, it was later rededicated to the liberation of Chongqing and now stands, oddly but endearingly, ringed by glass-and-steel towers that dwarf it in scale. For most residents and visitors, it serves as both a meeting point and an orientation marker, and its image appears on everything from postcards to local brands.
What makes the area rewarding is not just the shopping but the layered urban fabric around it. A few blocks away lie some of Chongqing's most famous food streets, traditional hot pot institutions, and stair-lane neighborhoods where the old "mountain city" atmosphere still clings to the hillside. The contrast between the polished retail core and the older lanes nearby captures the essence of contemporary Chongqing — fast, loud, ambitious, and deeply local at the same time.
Evening is when Jiefangbei truly comes alive: the monument glows under floodlights, the surrounding towers pulse with LED advertising, and the streets fill with shoppers, families, and strolling couples. For travelers, it makes an excellent base for a hotel or a natural meeting point before a hot pot dinner or a Two Rivers night cruise. Be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends and during national holidays.
