Egg Pastry
名物グルメEgg pastry is a snack made of dough kneaded from egg and flour, proved, then hand-pressed into moon-cake-shaped rounds and deep-fried; the skin turns golden and crisp while the centre stays soft and tender, with a deep egg fragrance.
Egg pastry is an original snack found only in Kaohsiung, founded by Grandma Su in 1963 before the Gushan ferry pier in Hamasen. Its recipe is said to come from a sailor who learned Japanese baking technique and passed it on to Grandma Su, making it a uniquely Kaohsiung old-fashioned treat.
Fried to order and best eaten hot by hand, it is the classic snack before or after the Cijin ferry ride, with more than a dozen sweet and savoury flavours from plain to peanut, cream, cheese and chocolate.
Its moon-cake-like golden round shape, the contrast of crisp shell and soft centre, the rich egg fragrance, and the fact that it can only be found in Kaohsiung are the marks of egg pastry.
