Zhangqiu Bangzi Opera

Zhangqiu bangzi is performed around Zhangqiu in Jinan, with its cradle at Shixia village in Guanzhuang. It has been handed down for more than three centuries as a local opera blending several vocal styles.

Set to the beat of wooden clappers, Zhangqiu bangzi has a high, rousing vocal style and earthy, bold performance, drawing its repertoire from folk tales and historical legend and passed on by local troupes.

Zhangqiu bangzi is an important opera form for studying the lineage of Shandong local theatre and the evolution of its vocal music, carrying the festival and entertainment traditions of rural Zhangqiu as a Shandong provincial heritage.
