Xiangsheng (Cross Talk Comedy)

起源

Xiangsheng, or cross talk, is a comedic storytelling art built on language, taking shape in Beijing during the later Qing out of street-corner busking and flourishing across the Beijing–Tianjin region.

芸能の形態

Cross talk rests on the four skills of speaking, imitating, teasing and singing, in solo, two-person and group forms. In the two-person form a "funny man" and a "straight man" play off each other, building laughs through punchlines, rapid tongue-twisting patter, mimicry and quick wit — verbal, fast and sharp.

文化的意義

Among China's most popular folk arts, xiangsheng is inscribed as national intangible cultural heritage. Masters such as Hou Baolin refined and elevated it, and it remains a living emblem of Beijing's street humor and verbal artistry.

体験できる場所

In Beijing, teahouses and small theaters are cross talk's most authentic stages, where audiences sit with tea and watch up close — keeping alive the intimate, street-born atmosphere from which the art arose.
