東澳島

Dong'ao Island sits in the middle of the Wanshan Archipelago off the southern coast of Zhuhai, a tropical-flavored island destination known for its dense vegetation, multiple sandy beaches, and the relative absence of the heavy development that has reshaped some of China's more accessible coastal spots. Among the islands reachable from Zhuhai, Dong'ao has built a reputation as one of the most rewarding for travelers willing to commit a full day or an overnight stay to reach it, and it draws visitors primarily for its shoreline, its seafood, and the slower pace of island life.

The island's signature landscape is its beaches, several of which stretch along the western and southern coasts with soft sand and water that is clearer than on the mainland shore. Inland, the wooded interior rises toward Fudan Mountain, where a climb up to the Honeymoon Pavilion rewards the effort with a panoramic view across the surrounding archipelago and back toward the Zhuhai coast. A surviving Qing-dynasty coastal fortification — the Tonggu Fort, locally known as the "cannon city" — sits on the island as a reminder of the strategic role these islands once played in the coastal defense of the Pearl River estuary, and fresh seafood stalls and small restaurants near the harbor serve the daily catch.

For foreign visitors, Dong'ao Island is one of the best excuses in the Zhuhai area to spend a night away from the mainland, and the crossing itself — by ferry from Zhuhai's Jiuzhou Port — is part of the experience, opening up views of the South China Sea and the scattered islands of the Wanshan chain. A day trip is possible but rushed; an overnight allows time for both the beaches and the inland walk to the pavilion, and gives the island a chance to quiet down after the day-trippers leave. The island is best visited outside the peak summer crowds and typhoon season, when ferry schedules can be disrupted.
