三遊洞について
Sanyou Cave, or the Cave of Three Visitors, is a famous historic cave site on the cliffside above the Yangtze at the western entrance to the Xiling Gorge, on the northwestern outskirts of Yichang. Carved with centuries of inscriptions and surrounded by a cluster of historic pavilions, it is one of the most literarily significant sites along the entire Yangtze and a major stop for travelers interested in Chinese classical poetry and calligraphy. For visitors in Yichang, it is one of the most rewarding half-day trips in the immediate vicinity of the city.
The cave takes its name from a famous Tang dynasty visit by the poet Bai Juyi, his brother Bai Xingjian, and the poet Yuan Zhen, whose accounts of the cave helped make it a destination for later scholars and officials. Three centuries later, the Song dynasty poets Su Xun and his sons Su Shi and Su Zhe visited the cave, giving it a second trio of famous visitors and cementing its place in the literary imagination. The walls of the cave and the surrounding cliffs are inscribed with poems and calligraphy by these and many later visitors, making the site a kind of open-air archive of Chinese literary history.
The cave itself opens onto a dramatic cliffside setting, backed by the steep slopes of the Xiling Mountains and looking out over the meeting of the Xiling Gorge and the Xialong Stream, a spot whose beauty ancient writers compared to a fantasy landscape. Around the cave, a network of pavilions, terraces, and small shrines includes the Zhixi Pavilion, the Chusai Tower, the ancient military ramparts, the Zhang Fei Drum Terrace, and the Lu You Spring, each tied to a different moment in the long history of the site.
Allow a couple of hours to explore the cave and the surrounding pavilions, with more time if you want to read the inscriptions in detail or follow the cliffside paths further along the gorge. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons, when the cliffside paths are comfortable and the views along the Yangtze are clearest. For travelers building a Yichang itinerary, Sanyou Cave offers a concentrated dose of classical Chinese literary history within easy reach of the city.

Three Visitors' Cave perches on the cliff at the northern mouth of the Xiling Gorge in Yichang's Yiling District, where the Xialao Stream meets the Yangtze, about ten kilometres downstream of the city centre. In the fourteenth year of Yuanhe in the Tang (819), the poets Bai Juyi and Yuan Zhen and Bai's brother Bai Xingjian met at Yiling (today's Yichang) and explored the cave together, each writing a poem while Bai Juyi composed the "Record of the Three Visitors' Cave" on the wall—hence the name, known as the "former three visitors"; in the Northern Song the father and sons Su Xun, Su Shi and Su Che visited together, the "latter three visitors." On and around the cave survive cliff inscriptions by Tang and Song masters from Bai Juyi, Ouyang Xiu and the three Sus to Huang Tingjian and Lu You, a precious epigraphic ensemble. In 2006 the Sanyou Cave cliff inscriptions were listed among the sixth batch of Major National Historical and Cultural Sites.
見学案内: Following the boardwalk up along the Xialao Stream, the cave opens in the cliff face, cool and roomy within, its walls thick with inscriptions across the centuries, the chief spot being where Bai Juyi wrote his record; the Zhixi Pavilion, Zhang Fei's Drum Terrace and Lu You Spring are scattered about, and the climb yields a view of the Yangtze meeting the Gezhou Dam. Reading the stones, one seems to hear the verses of the "former" and "latter three visitors" echoing across a thousand years.
