般若寺

Banruo Temple, also rendered as Prajna Temple, sits on the hillside behind Manzhen village on the outskirts of Jinghong and is one of the quieter but increasingly visited Theravada Buddhist temples of Xishuangbanna. Founded, by local tradition, in the early ninth century, it is among the older Buddhist sites in the prefecture, and after falling into disrepair over the centuries it was substantially rebuilt in the 2010s in a style that fuses Dai vernacular architecture with the broader Theravada vocabulary of mainland Southeast Asia. The restored complex has drawn growing numbers of visitors, particularly for its distinctive silhouette.

The single most striking feature is the temple's white-and-gold fabric. Where most Dai temples lean on gilded reds, greens, and ochres, Banruo is dominated by layered white plaster, mirrored mosaic, and slender gold finials, giving it a cooler, more austere presence than its neighbors. Inside, the main hall houses a large seated Buddha, and the wall reliefs and painted ceiling retell the life of the Buddha in a southern Theravada idiom. Carved nagas guard the entrance stairways, and the hillside setting, shaded by mature banyans and palms, keeps the air noticeably cooler than the streets of Jinghong below.

Because the temple is a working monastery rather than a museum, visitors share the space with resident monks and with local Dai families who come to make offerings, chant, and consult the abbot on matters of daily life. Mornings tend to be the calmest time to visit, and respectful dress and quiet behavior are expected, as at any active Theravada site in the prefecture.

For independent travelers who have already seen the larger Mengle Grand Buddha Temple and the General Buddhist Temple near Manting Park, Banruo offers a smaller, more contemplative third stop on a Jinghong temple circuit, and a striking example of how Dai religious architecture keeps reinventing itself in contemporary Xishuangbanna.
